Thinking with machines revisits a long standing idea in computing, that machines should help people reason, explore, and decide, not simply automate outcomes. Building on the work of Vannevar Bush, J. C. R. Licklider, and Douglas Engelbart, this talk presents a practical approach to designing AI systems as thinking partners. Instead of focusing on replacement or full automation, it shows how carefully guided AI interactions can extend human judgment, support exploration, and improve decision making over time. The session offers concrete patterns for building AI guided reasoning tools that preserve human agency while making modern AI genuinely useful in complex, real world work.

Internationally known author and speaker Mike Amundsen consults with organizations around the world on network architecture, Web development, and the intersection of technology & society. Amundsen has authored numerous books and papers. His recent book is "RESTful Web API Patterns and Practices Cookbook" (2022). His "Design and Build Great APIs" (2020) is a popular developer-centric book. Amundsen also contributed to the book, "Continuous API Management" (2020, 2018). His "RESTful Web Clients", was published in February 2017 and he co-authored "Microservice Architecture" (June 2016).
