By "Cartesian," I'm referring to the French philosopher René Descartes, who espoused a mechanistic view of human consciousness, out of which came his famous phrase cogito, ergo sum: "I think, therefore I am." Your thinking, and therefore your being, depends on the cells that constitute your brain's railroad system, allowing the electrical patterns—like trains—to follow their reflex arcs.
