"Metacognition allows us to weigh our options and then consciously decide our behavior rather than acting 'on impulse'." #readingToday

One of the common factors known to predispose people to a range of mental illnesses, alongside things like adverse experiences in childhood and low self-esteem, is an inability to step back and review thoughts and feelings objectively. Failure to "self-regulate" in this way is implicated in a wide range of behavioral and psychological problems, including poor school performance, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and drug abuse. Metacognition, by contrast, allows us to weigh our options and then consciously decide our behavior rather than acting "on impulse." Psychotherapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based programs have been explicitly designed to nurture metacognitive skills.
